The Rev. Joseph D. Small, formerly the PC(USA)'s Director of Theology, Worship, & Education, published an article in 2010 entitled, "The Travail of the Presbytery." The article describes developments in the leadership structures of our local churches and denomination since the 1950s, developments that have generally weakened the church both locally and nationally. It particularly describes changes in the office of Ruling Elder that have reduced the influence and usefulness of this ordered ministry of the church.
